Our new School Officers took part in the TISCA Prefect Training Day at Kingham Hill School this week. This is what they had to say…
We discussed lots of new things, especially how to work together in a team. As officers, we are sure that the qualities of leadership which we explored, such as patience, perseverance and kindness, will all be helpful to our success in representing our School and respective Houses.
In the first session, we talked about different leaders like Barack Obama, Winston Churchill and Steven Gerrard. We wrote about the qualities they possessed and talked about the need to ‘Serve to Lead’, which is the motto of the Sandhurst Military Academy. All of these great people have shown the world that ‘when the going gets tough, the tough get going.’
After this we went outside and into the Sports Hall. The first thing we did was all about formulating a strategy. We were given six trays and had to get our whole team of 8 across the Sports Hall without touching the ground. If you stood on the ground at any stage, then you would get blindfolded, which made it even harder.
Next we did the Enigma Code – in it we had to touch cones with the numbers 1 to 30 on them in the correct order. The fastest time we achieved was 1 minute and 10 seconds. This task showed how important it was to work collaboratively.
Directed by Wilf and Amulya, the St George’s House Captain and Deputy Head Girl respectively, next we had blindfolds and had to navigate our way through a convoluted maze, with Wilf and Amulya both guiding us with bells, but we couldn’t touch the boundaries.
Finally, we had a course where we had to move a basketball using ropes around obstacles. This involved patience as some of us couldn’t move the ball. Sadly, we couldn’t finish the course, but we ended the session with a massive smile on our faces having had lots of fun.
It was a great experience for us and a fantastic day. As well as learning how to be a great leader we also had a lot of fun! Thank you Mr Newman, Miss Green and Miss Levitt who made this possible. We really enjoyed it!
