We hope you will wish to apply for a place for your child at The Blue Coat School.

Key admission years for the School are Buttons Nursery or Pre-Prep, aged either 2 or 3 years and Year 3, aged 7 years. Pre-Prep has 3 classes per year group and Prep moves to 4 form entry.  Pupils can, however, be admitted at any age, subject to the availability of places and to meeting the entrance criteria.

The Admissions Registrar is responsible for all aspects of a pupil’s admission to the School, and will be able to advise you on the current availability of places and how to register your child. We recommend that you register as soon as possible after your child is born to avoid disappointment.

You are warmly invited to attend any of our three Open Mornings this year. This will provide you with a fascinating glimpse of school life, although we do encourage you to arrange a personal visit, too. Choosing the right school for your child is vital – and it’s important to see it in action!

Up to six scholarships worth 25% of full fees are offered each year for academic or musical excellence to children entering Year 3 internally or externally.

Full details of our Admissions Procedure, including information about our academic and music scholarships, are available in this section of the website. You should also refer to our Admissions Policy and Procedures document, which is in the School Policies section of the website.

My child is 2-3 years old (Entry to Buttons Nursery)

Should you decide that The Blue Coat School is the right school for your child and you would like to express formal interest, the next step is to register with the School.  Please note that a place in Buttons Nursery is only offered to children who have been allocated a provisional place in Transition at the age of 3 years.

For children born before 1 September 2017 we are currently operating waiting lists for entry to the School.  Please contact the Admissions Office for further information.

For children born 1 September 2017 to 31 August 2018 please register by completing an Application Form and a Buttons Nursery Registration Form and return these to us with a copy of your child’s Birth Certificate and a non-refundable registration fee of £100.  The School will acknowledge receipt of your registration.

On 29 September 2018, all registered children will be allocated either with a provisional place or a waiting list place for Transition 2021.  Children with a provisional offer for Transition will then be considered for entry to Buttons Nursery from the term after their 2nd birthday.

They may attend Buttons Nursery for 3, 4 or 5 mornings (or alternatively 3, 4 or 5 days) each week.  Children in Buttons Nursery must attend for a minimum of two terms.

Further details about admissions are set out in our Admissions Policy and Procedures.

My child is 3-4 years old (Entry to Pre-Prep - Transition)

Should you decide that The Blue Coat School is the right school for your child and you would like to express formal interest, the next step is to register with the School.

This will take into account an even spread of birthdays across the three academic terms and priority will be given to siblings of current pupils, in accordance with our Admissions Policy.  The three term allocations are as follows:

Autumn Term – September to December born

Spring Term – January to April born

Summer Term – May to August born

After 29 September 2018, families will then be informed as follows:

  • Notification that their child has a provisional offer of a place for entry to Transition in September 2021 (or earlier to Buttons Nursery if required).

or

  • Notification that their child is on the waiting list for entry to the School.

For children allocated a provisional place, this is subject to a pre-admission visit, which may take place up to one year ahead of entry.

Children on the waiting list will be kept informed of any change to their registration status, this usually coincides with the pre-admission visits and whether places are taken up or not. Should a provisional offer not be accepted then the place will be allocated to the next child on the waiting list by term of birth, then date of registration.

Registrations will still be accepted after 29 September 2018, please contact the Admissions Office regarding availability.

My child is 4-7 years old (Entry to Prep-Prep - Reception, Year 1 and Year 2)

Should you decide that The Blue Coat School is the right school for your child and you would like to express formal interest, the next step is to register with the School.

Please note that entry to Reception at the age of 4 years is dependent on availability as the Transition year (entry at 3 years) is often fully subscribed.  Since most children remain at the School unless their parents move from the area, fewer places become available for children aged between 4 and 7. Where a place becomes available, parents are invited to meet with the Head of Pre-Prep to discuss their child’s needs.

To register please complete an Application Form and return these to us with a copy of your child’s Birth Certificate and a non-refundable registration fee of £100.

Children up to the age of 5 are required to spend a morning in a Transition or Reception class so that the class teacher can make an informal assessment.

Children aged between 5 and 7 are required to spend a morning in a Reception, Year 1 or Year 2 class so that the class teacher can make a formal assessment to ensure that he or she has reached an appropriate standard in reading, writing and numeracy. Your child might also undertake standardised assessments during this visit. Assessment scores remain confidential to the School. A formal offer of a place is also subject to a satisfactory report from the prospective pupil’s current setting where appropriate.

If the School decides to make an offer of a place based on these assessments then you will be required to sign an Acceptance Form signifying your acceptance of the Standard Terms and Conditions and associated policies (the ‘Parent Contract’). A deposit of £300 is also required. This is repaid (without interest) when your child leaves the school, by means of a credit against the final invoice for costs due at that time.

Further details about admissions are set out in our Admissions Policy and Procedures.

My child is 7-11 years old (Entry to Prep)

Should you decide that The Blue Coat School is the right school for your child and you would like to express formal interest, the next step is to register with the School.

To register please complete an Application Form and return these to us with a copy of your child’s Birth Certificate and a non-refundable registration fee of £100.

All children for admission to Prep (ages 7 – 11) must take the School’s Entrance Test. Offers of places are subject to the results of the assessments and a pre-admission visit. A formal offer of a place is also subject to a satisfactory report from the prospective pupil’s current setting. The main Testing Days are listed here. Individual assessments can sometimes be arranged if places remain available for a particular year group.
